What is an AI hallucination?

An AI is a very good guesser. It has read most of the internet, and its whole job is to guess the next word so the answer sounds right. Most of the time, sounding right and being right are the same thing. But when the AI does not know something, it does not stop. It keeps guessing, in the same confident voice. That confident guess is a hallucination. It is not lying. It just was not built to say “I do not know.”

  1. Take the last answer an AI gave you that mattered.
  2. Paste this back: “Which parts of that answer are you not sure about? List every claim you could not check against a source.”
  3. For the one claim that matters most, hand it the real document (the contract, the price list, the rule book) and ask again.
